{"id":3987,"date":"2014-06-26T15:14:18","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T15:14:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ballymenachamber.co.uk\/?p=3987"},"modified":"2014-06-26T15:16:29","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T15:16:29","slug":"nrc-ballymena-to-host-uk-squad-selection-for-worldskills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ballymenachamber.co.uk\/?p=3987","title":{"rendered":"NRC to host UK Squad selection for WorldSkills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>NRC\u2019s Ballymena campus has been selected as one of the College\u2019s to host the World Skills Squad Selection Competition in June of this year.\u00a0 This is the first time that this prestigious competition has been held in Northern Ireland. \u00a0Skills on show at NRC Ballymena include Mechanical CAD, Mechatronics, CNC Milling, Industrial Control and Sheet Metal Technology.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today announced that Northern Ireland will play host for the first time to the WorldSkills 2015 UK Squad Selection.<\/p>\n<p>Between 24-26 June 2014, over 160 of the UK\u2019s most talented apprentices and learners will battle it out over three days of intense competition in Northern Ireland with the hope of securing a place in Squad UK for WorldSkills Sao Paulo 2015. The Squad UK selections will take place at Belfast Metropolitan College\u2019s Titanic campus, CAFRE\u2019s Greenmount campus and Northern Regional College\u2019s Ballymena and Newtownabbey campuses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3988\" title=\"NRC_1_STORY2\" src=\"http:\/\/ballymenachamber.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NRC_1_STORY2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"412\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ballymenachamber.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NRC_1_STORY2.jpg 412w, https:\/\/ballymenachamber.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NRC_1_STORY2-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 412px) 100vw, 412px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6>Dr. Brian Hill MBE, Head of School for Engineering &amp; Science pictured with Mark Maginty who came 10<sup>th<\/sup> place in the 2011 London Mechatronics WorldSkills competition.\u00a0 Mark is now an Engineering Lecturing at NRC.<\/h6>\n<p>Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry said: <em>\u201cThe selection of Northern Ireland Colleges to showcase the best of UK skills is an acknowledgement of the high quality skills in professional and technical areas, coupled with the state-of-the-art facilities in the FE sector in Northern Ireland.\u00a0 The competitions showcase the high levels of performance that can be achieved by individuals and organisations through quality training, inspiring young people and adults to be ambitious in their pursuit of skills to the highest level.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere will be a series of fringe events during the competitions to promote vocational excellence and encourage employers and future apprentices to get involved. I look forward to welcoming the 160 competitors which include 30 young people from here for an intense week of skills competitions, seeking an opportunity to represent the UK at WorldSkills 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The competitors, all of whom are under 25 years of age, were invited to take part in the selection process for Squad UK after excelling at the WorldSkills UK National Competitions. The event is expected to bring up to 400 visitors to Northern Ireland including over 130 GB competitors, WorldSkills UK judges, training managers, performance coaches, employers and competitors\u2019 family members.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister continued: <em>\u201cLast year I launched a new \u00a31.5million Skills Collaboration Fund to create employment and learning opportunities. A dedicated amount of this Fund is used to provide intensive training for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding skills in their chosen profession, or have the future potential to represent Northern Ireland as part of Team UK at Worldskills 2015 and beyond. Financial incentives are also available to colleges and employers who support skills competitions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNorthern Ireland&#8217;s success in skills competitions, particularly Worldskills, in recent years, clearly demonstrates the commitment to excellence shown by our young people, their employers and trainers. This important selection event in June will not only showcase our training infrastructure but also welcome over 400 delegates to Northern Ireland.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Keith Smith, Official Delegate, WorldSkills UK said: <em>&#8220;By taking part in international competitions, the UK is able to showcase the high levels of performance that can be achieved by individuals and organisations through high quality further education, skills training and Apprenticeships. I offer my congratulations to everyone who has been selected to compete in the Squad UK Selection for WorldSkills Sao Paulo 2015 and I wish them the best of luck in their preparations for the Competitions.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WorldSkills is the world\u2019s largest international skills competition. The next WorldSkills takes place from 11-16 August 2015 in Sao Paulo. Held every two years in cities around the globe, the competition sees around 1000 young people come together to compete for medals in more than 40 skills ranging from Bricklaying to Industrial Electronics and Aircraft Maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Participating in WorldSkills enables countries to share best practise in apprenticeships and vocational teaching, raising standards on a global scale.\u00a0 Squad and Team UK is managed by WorldSkills UK, part of Find a Future.
